When In Doubt, See A Physician Concerning TBI

does-he-have-brain-injuryTraumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a concern for many parents and spouses whose loved ones play hard. Whether on the football field, in the skate park, or sliding down the slopes, we have to prepare ourselves for the possibility that someone may experience a blow to the head.

Be prepared for such an event by familiarizing yourself with the symptoms of TBI. We asked our panel of expert contributors about how we can target the symptoms of TBI and when it is appropriate to see a doctor. Read the following tips to arm yourself with knowledge:

When should a football player (or soldier, or anyone) see a doctor about a traumatic brain injury (TBI)?

If a person has lost consciousness for any length of time due to a blow to the head, s/he should see a neurologist; in addition, after a head trauma (blow to the head or being hit in the head) symptoms of possible brain injury include: double vision,

  • ringing in the ears
  • severe, continuous headaches
  • personality changes (this is usually noticed by others, not the victim)
  • depression
  • dizziness or loss of coordination
  • feelings of confusion
  • searching for words
  • numbness or tingling
  • and distractedness or forgetfulness

Not all of these symptoms occur immediately after the “event,” some can occur days or weeks later. It’s important after a head trauma (especially one severe enough to cause loss of consciousness, even if it’s only for a few seconds) to contact one’s regular physician or a neurologist because not all indications of TBI are immediate.

When in doubt, See Your Physician

If a person suffers any kind of head injury no matter how insignificant it may seem at the time they should speak to or see a physician. Pain, bumps/lumps on the site of injury, headaches, drowsiness, dizziness, memory loss, unusual behavior are all reasons to see a doctor regarding TBI.
